Manuka honey has been used as a medicine by the indigenous people of New Zealand for thousands of years. In fact, various studies have found that the ingredient methylglyoxal has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is therefore often used for puncture wounds and abrasions, skin infections and to support wound healing. Manuka honey is also said to be effective against stomach and intestinal problems and respiratory diseases. However, the honey is not a miracle cure, so you should always consult a doctor if you are ill.
Unfortunately, there is currently no reliable seal for real Manuka honey and there are many counterfeits on the market. When buying, make sure that the manufacturer is a member of the New Zealand industry association "Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association". This tests the honey for its purity and authenticity.
To ensure that the honey lasts a long time, it should be stored in a dark place. It should not be too cold or too warm. The product should definitely not be kept in the fridge, but Manuka honey does not like temperatures above 25 degrees either.
